Applications are now being accepted for the Puget Sound Area Minority Clerkship Program via Symplicity. 1L students have until noon on January 23rd to submit their materials.

Washington First Responder Will Clinic

The WA First Responder Will Clinic will be held January 14, 2012 at the WSBA Headquarters in Downtown Seattle. This clinic will be a half-day clinic with 4 attorney/client meetings every hour, so volunteer slots for this clinic will be limited. (Don't worry, more clinics coming in February and April).

The WA First Responder Will Clinic is a program where volunteer attorneys who are in estate planning/probate practice prepare estate planning documents at no charge for fire fighters, police officers and first responders.

This clinic will be from 8:15 am to 1 pm. Kindly note that we are using an online sign up forum, so to volunteer please follow the link below:

Discussion Leaders: You must have your own professional liability insurance to participate in the clinic.

Document Drafters: We will not anticipate having a training session prior to this clinic, so if you have any questions please let me know. Also, please note that you must provide your own laptop.

1L Diversity Programs

Information pertaining to the upcoming firm diversity programs and deadlines is now live on our Diversity page. Be sure to check out the upcoming deadlines and to start preparing your materials over the break.

Some upcoming events include:

  • There will be a Diversity 1L Student Reception at Dorsey & Whitney on Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Dress is business professional. Diverse first-year law students are invited to meet representatives from the following local law firms and law schools. Business attire recommended. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be provided. Please contact Deverie Robinson, Regional Recruiting Manager, at deverie.robinson@klgates.com, with questions.
  • Program representatives from the Puget Sound Area Minority Clerkship Program will be on campus at 5:30 on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 in the Second Floor Gallery to talk about the program and answer questions about the application process. Dress is business casual.
  • The Annual Diversity Fellowship Meet & Greet with individual firms will be on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Second Floor Gallery. The event format will feature "table talk" and an opportunity to mingle with attorneys and recruiting representatives from firms hosting a 1L summer diversity fellowship. Dress is business professional.

Registration Open for the Northwest Public Interest Career Fair

Registration is now open for the annual Northwest Public Interest Career Fair.

For over two decades, the NW Public Service Career Fair has linked law students & alumni with opportunities to make a difference. 83 non-profits & government offices and more than 600 students & alumni from our 11 schools participated in 2011.

With information tables and pre-scheduled interviews in both Seattle and Portland, public service employers find student interns, externs, summer law clerks, volunteers, and attorneys.

Diversity Essay Competition Call for Entries

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers invites law students from accredited law schools in the United States to submit essays for a chance to be published in The Champion magazine.

2011-2012 Essay Topic
"Tough on Crime" vs. "Smart on Crime": What's the Difference?

What is the difference between “being tough on crime” and “being smart on crime” and what impact does each have on minority communities?
Eligibility

The contest is open to all students who are enrolled in the 2011-2012 academic year and in good academic standing at an accredited law school in the United States.
Prizes

  • There will be one first prize winner, one second prize winner, and one honorable mention.
  • The first prize winner will have his or her winning essay published in a forthcoming edition of NACDL’s magazine, The Champion; receive a $200 cash prize; receive a free one-year student membership; and receive a certificate of recognition.
  • The second prize winner will have his or her essay published in NACDL’s magazine, The Champion; receive a $100 cash prize; receive a free one-year student membership; and receive a certificate of recognition.
  • The entrant who receives an honorable mention will have his or her essay published in NACDL’s magazine, The Champion; and will receive a certificate of recognition.
